Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder, and it can affect both children and adults alike. Generally, individuals with ADHD have difficulty focusing on tasks, are restless, and may be impulsive. All of these symptoms can affect an individual’s academic, work, and social lives. Traditionally, the symptoms of ADHD are managed using medication like ritalin, which can have serious and long lasting side effects. Here at the Clear Mind Center of Boulder we are proud to offer a pharmaceutical-free treatment for ADHD—Neurofeedback! NeuroFeedback is a therapy which capitalizes on something called neural plasticity (the brains natural ability to adapt to change). It works by using photo stimulation from LED lights to elicit desired brain wave activity. ADHD, like many brain-based disorders, is associated with particular patterns of brain wave activity which are undesired. Neurofeedback therapy helps train the brain to stop using the problem brainwaves, and produce the more desired faster brain waves!
Researchers have used Neurofeedback therapy to help the symptoms of ADHD in a group of children, and found that it improved selective attention and goal driven behavior!
